Presented by the ALCTS Continuing Resources Section, the Ulrich’s Serials
Librarianship Award consists of a citation and $1,500, generously donated by
ProQuest.

The deadline for nominations is December 1, 2012.

The award is presented to an individual who has made distinguished and ongoing
contributions to serials librarianship, including but not limited to:

— Demonstrated leadership in the serials community through significant
contributions to the work of professional associations and/or to library
education programs
— Scholarship that has had a significant impact on the profession
— Research that advances the theory or practice of serials librarianship
— Development of tools or methods that enhance the access to or management of
serials
— Other advances that lead to a better understanding of the field of serials
librarianship

Nomination packets should include a letter of nomination; three to five letters
of support; the nominee’s resume; examples (no more than three) of the
nominee’s publications or other relevant documents. Self-nominations are

DPLA Midwest: Scholarships available for LIS students

On behalf of the Digital Public Library of America Secretariat, I would like to invite you and your community to attend the DPLA’s third major public event, DPLA Midwest<http://dp.la/get-involved/events/dplamidwest/>, taking place on October 11-12, 2012 at the Chicago Public Library in Chicago, IL. Convened by the DPLA Secretariat at the Berkman Center for Internet & Society and co-hosted by the Chicago Public Library, the event will bring together a wide range of stakeholders in a broad, open forum to facilitate innovation, collaboration, and connections across the DPLA effort.

DPLA Midwest will introduce the new DPLA Board of Directors, showcase the first steps toward the development of the online DPLA prototype, feature comments from participants in the Digital Hubs Pilot Project<http://dp.la/2012/07/26/national-endowment-for-the-humanities-announces-award-to-support-development-of-dpla/>, and continue to provide opportunities for public participation in the work of the DPLA, including in a full day of DPLA workstream meetings on October 11.

Limited scholarships to support participation in DPLA Midwest are available for those who are traveling from distant areas. We heartily encourage your students to apply by Friday, September 28, 2012. Scholarship amounts will vary, but are intended to apply to travel and accommodation costs for out-of-town participants. Preference will be given to applicants who have not yet attended a DPLA event.

This award recognizes a medical librarian who has demonstrated outstanding, sustained service to the Medical Library Association and the health sciences library profession. The award is named in honor of Virginia L. and William K. Beatty and recognizes their significant contributions to the association and the profession as longtime volunteers to the association. The winner receives a $1,000 cash award and a certificate.

Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the Medical Library Association Scholar Award 2012

The Membership and Recruitment Committee of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter (MAC) of the Medical Library Association invites new librarians to apply for a conference scholarship to attend the 2012 MAC Annual Meeting.

This year’s meeting will be part of the MLA Quad Chapter Meeting held at the Tremont Plaza Hotel in Baltimore, MD, October 13-16.

Award

One scholarship will be awarded. The selected recipient will receive complimentary conference registration, which includes most meals, lodging at the conference hotel, and a one-year MAC/MLA membership.

Eligibility Criteria:

Scholarship applicants must be:

• A MAC member with 5 or less years of post-MLS experience

• A first-time attendee at a the MAC/MLA Annual meeting

• Currently employed in a hospital or academic medical center library in the MAC/MLA region: District of Columbia, Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, and Western Pennsylvania

• Willing to submit a one-page report detailing their experience and impression of the meeting to appear in MAC Messages Blog.

• Committed to attend ENTIRE meeting from October 13-16, 2012.

Submission Guidelines:

To be considered for this award, you must:

• Obtain a letter of recommendation from your supervisor or library director

• Submit an essay, NO MORE THAN 500 WORDS, describing your interest in participating in the 2012 Conference Scholar Program, your interest in health sciences librarianship, and how attending the MAC/MLA meeting will contribute to your professional development.

• Submit a current resume and cover letter.

CHICAGO — The American Association of School Librarians’ (AASL) prestigious awards program will offer more than $50,000 in awards in 2013 to AASL members. AASL’s 10 awards recognize excellence and showcase best practices in the school library field in categories that include research, collaboration, leadership and innovation. AASL personal members are required to fill out applications using AASL’s online awards database. Recipients of awards and grants will be invited to the annual Awards luncheon and ceremony during the ALA 2013 Annual Conference in Chicago.

The 2013 AASL awards include the following:

The National School Library Program of the Year (NSLPY) Award, sponsored by Follett Library Resources, recognizes school districts and single schools for exemplary school library programs that are fully integrated into the school’s curriculum. Three winners receive a crystal obelisk and $10,000.
The Collaborative School Library Award, $2,500, sponsored by Highsmith, recognizes and encourages collaboration and partnerships between school librarians and teachers in meeting goals outlined in “Empowering Learners: Guidelines for School Library Programs” through joint planning of a program, unit or event in support of the curriculum and using media center resources.
The AASL Research Grant, $2,500, is given to up to two school librarians, library educators, library information science or education professors to conduct innovative research aimed at measuring and evaluating the impact of school library programs on learning and education. This grant is sponsored by Capstone.
The ABC-CLIO Leadership Grant, up to $1,750, sponsored by ABC-CLIO, is given to school library associations that are AASL affiliates for planning and implementing leadership programs at the state, regional or local levels.
The Distinguished Service Award, $3,000, sponsored by Baker &Taylor, recognizes an individual member of the library profession who has, over a significant period of time, made an outstanding national contribution to school librarianship and school library development.
The Distinguished School Administrator Award, $2,000, sponsored by ProQuest, is given to a school administrator who has made worthy contributions to the operations of an exemplary school library and to advancing the role of the school library in the educational program.
The Frances Henne Award, $1,250, sponsored by ABC-CLIO - Greenwood, enables a school librarian with five or fewer years in the field to attend an American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference or AASL National Conference for the first time.
The Information Technology Pathfinder Award, $1,000 to the school librarian and $500 to the library, sponsored by Follett Software Company, recognizes and honors a school librarian who demonstrates vision and leadership through the use of information technology to build lifelong learners. There are two categories: Elementary and Secondary.
The Innovative Reading Grant, $2,500, sponsored by Capstone, is designed to fund literacy projects for grades K-9 that promote the importance of reading and facilitate literacy development by supporting current reading research, practice and policy.
The Intellectual Freedom Award, $2,000 to the winner and $1,000 to the school library of the winner’s choice, sponsored by ProQuest, is given for upholding the principles of intellectual freedom as set forth by AASL and the ALA.

The deadline for submitting applications or nominations for most AASL awards and grants is Feb. 1, 2013. For the NSLPY award, the deadline is Jan. 1, 2013. All applications will close at 4:30 p.m. CST on the day of the deadline.

Applicants are encouraged to read all award and grant criteria on the AASL website before applying. Rating sheets are provided to give applicants an understanding of the items the award committee will use to base their scores. Institute of Certified Records Managers' Alan Andolsen "Mentor of the Year Award"

The Institute of Certified Records Managers (ICRM) established the Alan Andolsen “Mentor of the Year” Award at their Spring Board Meeting in April 2011. The award was created to recognize an individual who, in the opinion of the Awards Committee, has contributed significantly to the ICRM by mentoring activities. Qualification for this award shall be as follows:
1. A Certified Records Manager (CRM) in good standing who has contributed significantly to the ICRM and to certification by mentoring activities. These activities should be over a longer than one year period and have impacted more than one individual. Mentoring activities include, but are not limited to the following:
1. Individual mentoring and coaching;
2. Promoting the CRM designation;
3. Teaching/presentation at CRM Prep seminars or other venues;
4. Hosting or contributing to CRM study groups;
5. The committee may take other relevant information into account as well.
2. No member of the Board of Regents shall be eligible for the award for a minimum of two years after leaving the Board.

The award will be presented at the ICRM Annual Business Meeting to be held in conjunction with the ARMA International Annual Conference. Nominations are open to the ICRM membership as a whole, and selection will be made by a three-member Awards committee composed of the Chairman of the Board, the President-Elect and the Regent, Public Relations and Marketing. Nominations can be made by a non-CRM (i.e. President of an ARMA Chapter); however, only CRMs are eligible for this award. SLA LMD 2012 Karen J. Switt Leadership Award

The awards committee is soliciting nominations from the Leadership and Management Division for the 2012 Karen J. Switt Leadership Award.

Each year, the Leadership & Management Division honors a member who has shown outstanding leadership, served as a role model for others, and contributed significantly to SLA. In 1999, the award was named in memory of Karen J. Switt, a much-admired and much-missed LMD member. For those of you who did not know Karen, here is a linkto an November 29, 1999 article from the Chicago Tribune that describes her life.

Patricia Ciawas recognized for her outstanding leadership in 2011 and here is a link to previous award winners since 1989.

Potomac Technical Processing Librarians (PTPL) scholarships for future librarians interested in technical services 2012

PTPL SCHOLARSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT 2012

Potomac Technical Processing Librarians (PTPL) announces the availability of two $1,000 scholarships for future librarians interested in technical services. Students living or working in the PTPL membership region (DC, Maryland, Virginia) and who are currently enrolled in an ALA-accredited Library and/or Information Science program, including distance education programs, are invited to apply.

Criteria Requirements for the Award:

1. The applicant must be a full or part-time student in Library and/or Information Science at the Master’s level and have completed at least one three-hour credit course.

2. The applicant must demonstrate an interest in library technical services through employment, course of study, or research interests. Technical services is work “dedicated to acquisition, identification, cataloging, classification, and preservation of all kinds of library materials” (see: ALCTS, http://www.ala.org/alcts/mgrps/sections).

SLA Diversity Leadership Development Program Award 2012

SLA DLDP Award Applications due 11 April 2012

The SLA Diversity Leadership Development Program (DLDP) Award aims to accelerate the advancement and visibility of members who represent a diverse population of the Association by mentoring them for more leadership opportunities within SLA, to ensure that the Association remains vital, relevant, and representative of its diverse membership.

The DLDP awardee receives a $1,000 stipend to defray the cost of attending SLA 2012 in Chicago, as well as complimentary registration and specific ticketed events as appropriate. The awardee also will work with an SLA member mentor to assist the candidate in understanding the mechanics of how the Association works and the roles of the Association leaders. Call for Nominations for the 6th American Psychological Association’s Excellence in Librarianship Award

The American Psychological Association’s Excellence in Librarianship Award was created to recognize an outstanding contribution to psychology and behavioral sciences librarianship. The award includes a $2,500 check and an inscribed plaque, which will be presented at the EBSS Forum at the American Library Association Annual Conference in Anaheim in June 2012.

Who Is Eligible?

This award is open to both librarians and allied professionals who have demonstrated significant achievement in librarianship in the social and behavioral sciences.

Examples of achievement may include one or more of the following: instruction, project development, publications, research, or service. APA employees are not eligible.

Who Can Nominate?

Individuals may nominate themselves or others. Nominations will be accepted from library users, students, faculty, library colleagues, or others with knowledge of the nominee’s achievement.

Nomination Procedure and Timeline

Please submit the following electronically by April 16, 2012:

· Nomination statement (describe the contribution and its significance within and outside of the institution); a current curriculum vitae; and optional supporting documentation may be included with nomination (digital copies or URL’s leading to online documentation)

· Letters of support (no more than three; at least one letter from a direct beneficiary of the services provided by the nominee is strongly encouraged)

· Contact information for the nominee

DC Library Association (DCLA) Awards 2012

We are currently accepting nominations for the following District of Columbia Library Association awards:

Ainsworth Rand Spofford President’s Award

This award recognizes outstanding contributions to the development of library and information services. Winners do not have to be members of DCLA. This was last awarded in 2009 to Roberta Stevens, ALA President-elect and National Book Festival project manager.

Distinguished Service Award

This award recognizes outstanding contributions to the District of Columbia Library Association by an active, current DCLA member. In 2009, this was awarded to Barbara Folensbee-Moore in recognition of her DCLA presidency, her long-time commitment to National Library Legislative Day, and her mentoring of new and aspiring librarians.

Community Service Award

This award recognizes those who have volunteered their library expertise to develop a library program, facility or service unrelated to their current employment. Preference is given to DCLA Members. In 2009, this was awarded to Richard Huffine for his dedicated leadership of the Federation of Friends of the D.C. Public Libraries.

Other Awards:

DCLA occasionally awards other certificates or plaques. For example, in 2009, a Certificate of Appreciation was awarded to Barbara Conaty for her long service as editor of the DCLA newsletter.

In 2007, Anne Osterman [Elguidi] received a Certificate of Appreciation for her extraordinary contributions as a first year member of DCLA.

Georgia Library Association Scholarships 2012

The Georgia Library Association awards two scholarships annually to students completing a master’s degree in library science. The Hubbard Scholarship, a $3,000 award, is intended to recruit excellent candidates for librarianship and defray some of the costs of their education. The Beard Scholarship, in the amount of $1,000, is for applicants who show strong potential for leadership in the library profession. Recipients of both awards must agree to work for at least one year in Georgia following graduation but need not be residents of Georgia to apply.

The deadline to apply for the 2012 scholarships is May 21.

APALA Conference Travel Award 2012

Heading to the Anaheim this summer? Need help getting there? Apply for the APALA Travel Award. The APALA Travel Award will provide $500.00 to support attendance at the 2012 American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference. The Travel Award will fund one APALA member (librarian or library/information school student) to attend the conference and will be used to help cover registration and travel expenses. APALA Student Scholarship Award 2012

Are you in library/information school, or headed there this Fall? The Asian Pacific American Librarians Association Scholarship will provide financial assistance to a student of Asian or Pacific background who is enrolled, or has been accepted into, a master’s or doctoral degree program in library and/or information science at a school accredited by the American Library Association (ALA). We hope that you will apply for the award or encourage others that you know to do so as well.

Rethinking Resource Sharing Innovation Awards 2012

The Rethinking Resource Sharing (RRS) Innovation Awards recognizes and honors an individual or institution for changes they made to improve users’ access to information through resource sharing in their library, consortium, state or country. It is hoped that the award will encourage libraries and librarians to make changes in how they do resource sharing to improve service to users. RRS looks for efforts where people didn’t wait for the profession to provide better services for users.

The Rethinking Resource Sharing Innovation Awards consists of a $1,000 cash award and a citation to the entity that applies. In 2012 Rethinking Resource Sharing will make one award. The most valuable ideas will be posted to the Rethinking Resource Sharing website in the hope that by sharing a great number of creative resource sharing ideas it will inspire others to try and implement similar ideas.

Funding for the 2012 Innovation Award is provided by Relais International.

Eligibility:

Nominations are accepted for individuals, library institutions, or consortia. Individuals being nominated must have been employed in a library (anywhere in the world) and held some responsibility for their institution’s resource sharing services at the time the contribution is nominated. Innovations must have gone live since January 2009.

Application process:

Self nominations as well as nominations for other individuals or institutions/consortia are accepted. Please submit a description of the user-centric service change you made that has improved resource sharing in your library, consortium or state. Please include the following information:

Describe a new service you offer, or how you changed an existing service. Explain how it improved your users’ access to information or otherwise improved service. Provide statistics or other indicators of impact and trends
Indicate how long this idea has been in place; when did it start operation?
Describe briefly the library or consortium in which this resource sharing idea is in place (e.g. size of institution, number of requests processed and filled, etc).
Describe how your user-centered service fits in with the seven principles of the Rethinking Resource Sharing Manifesto.http://www.rethinkingresourcesharing.org/manifesto.html
How did your library/consortia decide that a change was needed in this area?
What solutions did you find to overcome barriers to implementing this service?
Comment on the likelihood that this change will be a permanent change. What steps are you taking to insure that the improvement in service can continue?

Ability for other libraries/consortia to replicate the idea
Initiative and risk taking

The recipient of the 2012 Award will be announced at the ALA Annual Conference in Anaheim, CA, June 21-26, 2012.

Background:

The Rethinking Resource Sharing Initiative is an ad hoc group that advocates for a complete rethink of the way libraries conduct resource sharing in the context of the global internet revolution and all of the developments that have arisen from that. The group is advocating for a revolution in the way libraries conduct resource sharing.

John Cotton Dana library public relations award raised to $10K

The H.W. Wilson Foundation, the Library Leadership & Management Association (LLAMA), a division of ALA, andEBSCO Publishing are excited to announce that chances to win a John Cotton Dana (JCD) Award have increased tremendously. Now there are eight awards, and the amount for each winner has gone up to $10,000!

Presented since 1946, JCD Awards honor outstanding public relations efforts by a library, whether it be a summer reading program, a year-long centennial celebration, fundraising for a new college library, an awareness campaign, an innovative partnership in the community, etc.

Be sure to submit your entry detailing the public relations initiatives at your library by March 15, 2012. Award winners will be announced in April. The cash development grants will presented at an elegant reception, hosted by the Foundation, during the American Library Association Annual Conference in June 2012, in Anaheim, Calif.

Scholarships Offered for ANCHASL Spring 2012 Meeting in Asheville, NC

If you’re thinking about attending the Spring ANCHASL Meeting and C.E.: “Peeling the Onion (Clinical Informatics)” on April 20, 2012, please consider applying for one of the scholarships that the ANCHASL Board has made available to ANCHASL members to help with your finances. Up to three scholarships will be awarded. Recipients with a short commute will receive an award of $75. In order to encourage participation by those members living more than 90 miles from the meeting location, an additional $100 will be made available to them for travel costs, for an award amount of $175.

To be eligible, you must live or work in North Carolina and be a member of ANCHASL. Not an ANCHASL member? Don’t let that stop you! Join now!

Course Description:

Clinical informatics is often described as the “intersection of computer science, health sciences and information science.” The objective is twofold. First, it will broadly explore this busy, growing intersection from several vantage points. And two, it will illustrate the “front-facing” skills that librarians, a.k.a information scientists, can bring to the field of clinical informatics and healthcare information technology. The demand for informaticians is expected to outstrip supply by 2015 because of federal healthcare reform initiatives launched, starting in 2004. As a result, workforce development programs are now in place to help mitigate this shortage with some programs of interest to librarians.

Registration fee: $55 Members, $70 Non-members, $20 Student Members, $25 Student Non-members. Includes box lunch. Please make your lunch choice below.
