Georgia Library Association Scholarships 2012

The Georgia Library Association awards two scholarships annually to students completing a master’s degree in library science. The Hubbard Scholarship, a $3,000 award, is intended to recruit excellent candidates for librarianship and defray some of the costs of their education. The Beard Scholarship, in the amount of $1,000, is for applicants who show strong potential for leadership in the library profession. Recipients of both awards must agree to work for at least one year in Georgia following graduation but need not be residents of Georgia to apply.

The deadline to apply for the 2012 scholarships is May 21.

Miriam Braverman Memorial Prize from the Progressive Librarians Guild (PLG)

Calling all Activist-Librarians-to-be!!

Are you an LIS student who has been a bit pre- #Occupied? Do you struggle with how to bring together your incipient librarianship and your quest for global justice?

Well, bring those passions together in a exemplary paper, get published, and go to ALA Annual!

The MIRIAM BRAVERMAN MEMORIAL PRIZE, a presentation of the

Progressive Librarians Guild (PLG), is awarded each year for the best paper

about some aspect of the social responsibilities of librarians, libraries, or

librarianship. Papers related to archivists, archives, and archival work are also

eligible.

The winning paper will be published in the Summer 2012 issue of Progressive

Librarian. The winner of the contest will also receive a $300 stipend to help

offset the cost of travel to and from the 2012 American Library Association

(ALA) Annual Conference in Anaheim, CA from June 21-26. The award will be presented at the annual PLG dinner at ALA.

Think you might be interested? Here’s the fine print.

1. Contestants must be library and/or information science students attending a graduate-level program in the United States or Canada.

2. Entries must be the original, unpublished work of the contestant, and must be written in English. Entries may not exceed 3,000 words, and must conform to MLA in-text citation style.

3. To facilitate the blind review process, each entry must include a cover sheet providing the contestant’s name, full contact information (address, phone number, e-mail address), name of the institution where the contestant is enrolled, and the title of the paper. No identifying information, other than the title, should appear on the paper itself.

4. Entries must be submitted electronically, in Microsoft Word or RTF format, to

bravermansubmissions@gmail.com. Entries must be received no later than 5:00 p.m. CST on international workers’ day, or May Day, May 1, 2012.

5. The $300 stipend is available only to help defray the cost of ALA conference attendance in 2012; if the winner of the contest is unable to attend, the money will remain in the Braverman Prize endowment fund and may be donated to a progressive cause at the discretion of the selection committee.

Southern California Association of Law Libraries Student Scholarships 2012

The Southern California Association of Law Libraries (SCALL) Library School Liaison Committee is now accepting applications for this year’s student scholarships. Applicants must live in Southern California and be a currently enrolled graduate student in either the UCLA Department of Information Studies or a distance/online library school program.

The purpose of the SCALL Scholarship is to reward current library school students living in Southern California who hold promise of future involvement in the law library profession. Each scholarship awarded varies in an amount up to $1,000. offering one PhD studentship (for UK/EU students only) that present a
range of opportunities for committed, intelligent and enthusiastic
individuals wishing to pursue doctoral research. The School’s PhD

Research Studentship in the area of ‘public sector transformation
challenges in the 21st century’

Start date:  1st March 2012

You will have at least a 2.1 class bachelor’s degree, ideally possess a
Masters degree in a relevant discipline, and be proficient in English to
at least IELTS 6.5 level. The terms of the bursary are the full payment
of Home/EU fees for a maximum of three years, and £13,590 per year,
subject to annual review and satisfactory progress. You will be required
to engage in teaching activities including preparation, marking time and
invigilation for up to 150 hours per academic year, as part of the
university’s graduate teaching assistants’ (GTA) programme, for which
training will be provided. The appointed candidate will be supervised by
a team of experts in the field of public sector research, but expected
to work independently and demonstrate scholarly work through
publications in peer reviewed journals and conferences through the
duration of the appointment.

Graduate Study Scholarships

The Washington Library Association awards one or more scholarships annually to WLA members who are enrolled in an ALA-accredited MLIS degree program and have completed at least one semester or quarter. The scholarships are up to $6,000 per recipient. Applicants are evaluated based on demonstrated potential for leadership in the profession and commitment to libraries and library service.

April 18-20- Scholarship awarded at the 2012 WLA Conference in Tulalip, WA

How to Apply

Complete the Application form and attach to it:

- Your current resume.
- Copy of an official transcript from the MLIS program you are attending, showing work completed during your last semester or quarter.
- Three letters of recommendation, with at least one from a professor or advisor in your MLIS program. Each letter of recommendation should include contact information (email and telephone) for the person writing it.
